Your ultimate goodbye to 2017's best covers.
Dear 2017, you were ugly, but your covers were gorgeous. As we say goodbye and look forward to the new year, don't forget there's still time to add these lovely books to your collection, and there are 365 fresh Instagram squares to fill with all your good taste. ❤
COVERS: THE IDIOT, WORD BY WORD,
& MY CAT YUGOSLAVIA
DESIGNER: OLIVER (THE GREAT) MUNDAY
We must address that Oliver Munday killed it in 2017. Each cover is bold, funny, and holds a daring sense of color. Well done, sir.
COVERS: A SELFIE AS BIG AS THE RITZ,
STAY WITH ME, ALBUM FOR THE YOUNG (AND OLD)
DESIGNER: JANET HANSEN
Moral of Janet's story: Hire more women to design your book, please. God, these are perfect, perfect, perfect! Don't you think that orange and hot pink color combo is the best EVER?!
COVERS: MENTAL, HOME FIRE,
& SHE BEYOND THE SUN
DESIGNER: BEN DENZER
Is Ben solely responsible for moving the internet's taste from millennial pink to millennial purple? Maybe! Few designers successfully move such a modern and hip sensibility into a mass market like Denzer.
COVERS: THE ANSWERS & TOUCH
DESIGNER: RODRIGO CORRAL
You may know him for his work on two of the best books of all time: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz and Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff. But in 2017 he had two of the best covers of the year, smartly employing the lettering and illustration greats Patrick Leger and June Park.
COVERS: HEMINGWAY BOX SET
DESIGNER: KAJSA KLAESEN
What a lovely tribute to our troubled literary great-grandpa. Here is a nice statement on the design treatment:
The box includes the titles "To Have and Have Not", "The Old Man and the Sea" and "Islands in the Stream". They're gathered in this collection because the sea plays an important part in all of them. I've used subtle wave shapes to communicate this. The bigger part the sea plays in the book, the bigger the waves get. The inspiration for the color scheme came from 1930's travel posters, i.e. from the time Hemingway wrote the books.
COVERS: THE NEW OLD ME, SARATOGA
PAYBACK, ACID TEST
DESIGNER: SPENCER KIMBLE
Spencer is simply a lettering and color wiz kid.
COVERS: KNOTS, FRESH COMPLAINT, ISADORA
DESIGNER: NA KIM
Grownup yet hip. Color-conscious yet classic. Na, we love you.
While scrolling through Na's work this year, we found a rejected cover that we adore. See Na's original cover design used for Marianne Moore's book of collected poems below.

COVERS: THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
ART DIRECTOR: MATT DORFMAN
Not only did Matt design our literary-fairy-god-uncle John Jodzio's book Knockout last year, but he also designed one of the best covers of 2017, Hollow.
But what do we really need to thank Matt for? His beautiful work on the New York Times Book Review.
NOTE: Don't miss his hotly anticipated and very profesh New York Times roundup of the best covers of 2017.
**Note to Jaya: Please hire yourself more for illustration. Tom's book is 20 percent better because of your illo.
***Note to readers: Please read this Spine Magazine interview with Jaya, the Wonder Woman.
COVERS: THE ONES WITH PATTERNS
A quick nod to the covers with great text over pretty patterns.

This trend will certainly continue into 2018. Can't wait.
