Apropos of nothing...

I'm pretty sure that the Built to Spill song "Untrustable/Pt. 2 (About someone else)" is about Salinger's Franny and Zooey. Maybe I'm insane. Maybe it's not the whole song, but there's this lyric that goes, "And God is whoever you're performing for/ And God is whoever you perform for," which is essentially what Zooey tells Franny at the end.

You know, if you Google "literary song lyrics" the only following songs come up over and over again:

"Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin, which is, of course, about The Lord of the Rings,

"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane, about Alice in Wonderland.

But what, that's it? You've got to be kidding me. Am I just not looking for literary references (not to the Bible, ok?) in songs? So, sure, okay Poe had a moderate radio hit in 2000 with "Hey Pretty", which had it's lyrics removed and replaced with a passage from House of Leaves by (her brother) Mark Z. Danielewski. However, I wouldn't really call that a reference.

Here's the thing. I'd like to make a mixtape of songs with literary references. Can you help me? If you help, I can give you a copy when it's complete!

*Also, no songs about Romeo and Juliet, okay? Especially not that one that is in TWO Ethan Embry movies from the 1990s.*

Similarly, are there any books out there that are based on songs? There's got to be one, or two. Right?

Courtney Algeo wants only to please you. And eat hamburgers. Maybe a salad. Definitely a beer.
