Herekita Con K
Herekita uses these bold beauties to reveal the inner monologue of modern womanhood. She illustrates our vulnerabilities on the bodies of these women and in the titles of her paintings. Each of her luscious ladies oozes fierce femininity within her environments. In her own environment of Bogota, Colombia, Herekita starts her day by watching her daughter sleep. Her strength as a mother comes through in her paintings, and she spends her days painting and creating work while her daughter is at school.
Herekita's paintings are born of ink, acrylic, and specialized paper. Her artistic interest was born at her great-grandmother's house. This young girl would write letter after letter to her brother's friends, her inspiration spurred by her aunt's artwork hanging on closet doors in the house.
Below is the green and glowing giant featured in Paper Darts Volume 7. We love having this piece in the magazine, and having Herekita Con K as one of our octoladies.
Herekita identifies as a hopeless melancholy. This artist has curated her own house to be a childhood play place. She has brought back her childhood favorite foods and music, and the creativity that keeps her strong.
We love a good guilty pleasure!
Herekita loves to create in remote places, surrounded by the sounds of a bad soap opera. This dramatic environment is mixed with her love of memories, music, and paintings from the Middle Ages.
Motherhood is a major component of Herekita's daily routine; her daughter is an extension of her body. These Colombian women cook together, eat together, sleep together, and create together. But Herekita knows to set aside time for her own work.
Do you believe in ghosts?
Do you believe in aliens?
What's the last dream you can remember?
I was on top of an unstable table, and there was a giant rat on the floor. I was very scared, and woke up screaming.
Herekita's idea of happiness includes nature, her daughter, her family, a painting that is going well, and eating delicious food while watching television.
What is your favorite virtue?
I'm a caring person. I think I care about people in general.
Your main fault?
Watching bad soap operas while I paint.
I always say "everything will be fine" in my head. I really believe in a wonderful energy that accompanies prayer. I like to just say thank you every day.
