Hailing from Barcelona, la perla del Mediterraneo, is the bold Cristina Daura. This artist is a pearl herself. She finds inspiration in her favorite comics and challenges herself by sticking to specific color palettes. She loves to include these palettes and her process on her website. Her twisted narratives, such as taking LSD or using one's nanny as a riding horse, create charmingly unique comics specific to her boundless imagination.
Daura begins her work with a pencil, some ink, and her computer. She has worked with her Cintiq pad for the last two years, and it has become her best friend. Here's an incredible example of Daura's process, her palette, and the finished piece.
One of Daura's favorite quotes comes from RuPaul:
“Unless they paying your bills, pay them bitches no mind.”
Daura's use of bold primary and soft secondary colors makes for striking imagery. Each is layered with multiple symbols that create mini stories within each of her pieces.
Do you believe in ghosts?
"I only believe in ghosts when I’m sleeping alone. I start to think about who used to live in my house, and if someone died there and therefore if that person who died was nice or bad. I always try to think that if I haven’t been playing with an Ouija board, no ghost is going to attack me. At least that’s what I have learned."
Do you believe in aliens?
"Yes, of course. Whoever doesn't believe in aliens in the twentieth century is ignorant."
Daura spends her days working in her studio, drinking coffee, and distracting her studiomates.
Her days are also filled with caring for her new rabbit. She rescued a rabbit she found in a cage between two trash cans in an alley late one night. Daura is trying her best to make the new rabbit happy and play with it when she can.
Her nights are spent relaxing at home with her boyfriend. Although, more recently, her house has become a central hub for their friends to gather. And she admittedly enjoys having them around.
